    Sir
I am facing a problem. I and my wife have been working in UAE for the past 4 years. My baby girl was born a year ago in UAE.

When we heard of the SSA we were interested, so when we went for vacation, we contacted a person we knew working in the post office and with the person’s help we opened an SSA account. At that time we did not know that NRI cannot open SSA. The person who helped us did not inform us. The person asked for passport copy of mine and my daughter and birth certificate as documents along with my photo. I gave the birth certificate from UAE and also the birth certificate we received from the Indian embassy here in UAE.

One year passed and we came to know about this NRI problem a week back during a casual talk with one of my friend. I asked the person working in post office about this and the person says there is no rule barring NRI and the only condition is that you cannot send money from overseas.

I am confused now. I have been sending money for the past one year. I have a pass book for the SSA. I dont think the person in the post office knows the ruIes very well.I dont want to break any rules. Please help me what should I do?
How can I get out of this trouble.

If I cannot have an SSA I dont care. As I said I dont want to break rules, but atleast I want the money back I invested.
    Please Help me.

    With Regards

I read your reply for various query and i believe i can also open the SSA? Let me know if i am correct and can proceed to open SSA?

    Hello Mam,

There is lot of confusion around this. Please clarify my case. My wife, my daughter and myself are all INDIAN citizen but I am working abroad. We are here for last 5 years. As per NRI definition we are NRIs but citizens of India working abroad on VISA. We have INDIAN address proof, drivers license, voter card, aadhar card. Can we avail this facility?

Hello Sir- please do confirm in line with 1) to 4)

I have been living in Japan since 2005 holding Indian nationality. I got married in Jan 2015 and my wife also holds an Indian passport.
I was blessed with a baby girl in May 2016 (born in Japan) and she also holds an Indian passport (so we all are Indian).
However, as per the definition we are considered as NRI but now my wife coming back to India in Aug 2016 and planning to settle there (she lived in Japan around 1 year)
    Based on above,

    1) Are we eligible for applying SSY for our daughter?
    2) Does both of us need to present for applying SSY or only wife attendance is okay for opening SSY?
    3) In future if my wife and daughter comes back to Japan, is there any impact on SSY?
    4) If me of my daughter change nationality (not my wife) after opening SSY, is there any impact on scheme?

    Kind regards
    Vikas

    Hello Madam,

I am living in USA for last 6 years, daughter born in May 2016 is American Citizen. We opened a SSA account for her in a post office back in India. I submitted her US born birth certificate at the time of account opening. Both self and my wife hold Indian Citizenship. Will my SSA account be valid if my daughter continues to be American Citizen?

In one of the comments above you said if the girl child holds a OCI card then the account is valid? Does that mean I will have to issue a OCI card for her in future to get the benefits at maturity?

    Thanks for your reply.

The scheme permits every Indian to open SSA for their girl child. A Resident Indian opens an account for their daughter and then moves abroad. In that situation, the parents would continue to operate the account and reap the benefits of the scheme simply because they were resident Indian at the time of opening of Sukanya Samriddhi Account.

Me, My wife and my daughter have Indian Passports. My daughter born in India in 2013. We came to USA in 2014 and became NRIs but still having Indian Citizenship.
My mother had opened a Sukanya Samriddhi account in the name of my child (Grandmother as a guardian) in 2015 when we are in USA and started investing on monthly basis. We invested for almost 2 years and my questions are below.
    1. Is it allowed to open a SSY account by a grand mother when parents are alive? My village post office manager had just accepted the application from my mother and we started investing in it.
    2. Am i good to continue putting money in it?
    3. Is there a possibility or option to convert the account from grand mother name to my name when i come back to India? (this is only for my tax saving purpose when i back to India and work there)
    4. How difficult is this to convert the account from my mother name to my name?
    5. Will there be any problem in future at the maturity time as the child was in other country when the account got opened?
    5. what do you suggest in my case?

Then what about the 2nd point in your below Article..? pls clarify. All your replies are very short and not enough to clear our confusions. Please check given poit no.2.
“Major changes in the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Yojana in 2017”

        2. SSY for NRI’s – As per new changes in SSY Scheme the investment scheme is now not available for NRI’s. Previously the scheme was available for NRI girl child also but now SSY is available for only Indian Resident Girl Child. According to this at the time of opening the SSY account the child must be an Indian Citizen residing in India. If in future the status of residence changes the parents of guardians must inform to the post office or bank regarding the same within a month. In such case the interest credited will be reversed and the balance funds in account will be returned to the investor. So according to this change the girl child should be Indian resident residing in India at the time of investment as well as at the time of maturity.

Last year during my last vacation, we opened an SSY account in our Post Office. At that time when I asked about this NRI eligibility problem, the post office employee told me there is no issue to open this SSY for my daughter. He only asked for passport copy of mine and my daughter and birth certificate as documents along with my photo.

But, I am confused now. I have already deposited money for the past one year and I have a pass book for the SSY. I dont think the person in the post office knows the ruIes very well. Please help me with the exact details.
If I cannot have an SSY I dont care. I am ready to close but atleast I want the money back I invested.

If I continue the contribution, then any issues we need to face at the time of maturity?

This text has been taken from times of india news. Can you tell me whether nri is eligible for this account or not. Here it is clearly mentioned that either parent or child must be resident throughout the operation of account or closure of account.

Can the account be opened in the name of an NRI girl child?
A girl child is eligible for an SSY account only if she is a resident Indian citizen when the account is opened, and remains so until the maturity or the closure of account.
Non-resident Indians can no longer open an SSY account. In fact, if you or your child’s residential status changes to non-resident or she takes up another country’s citizenship during the term of the scheme, no interest shall be paid from the date of citizenship or residential status changes and the account will be considered closed.

Hi, I am padmanaban, living in saudi arabia for past 7 years.
In 2016, we are blessed with a baby girl and birth certificate has been issued by Indian Consulate at Jeddah.
The birth certificate issued by indian consulate says that my baby girl born in saudi arabia.
Now my baby has Indian passport and living with my wife in india for past 1 year. But still we maintain the residence permit issued by saudi arabia. As you know, saudi arabia does not allow citizenship for expatriates.
Can I open SSY account for my baby girl with the birth certificate mentioning that she born in saudi arabia?
