There are many confusions in the people about NRI status of parents and daughter for opening Sukanya Samriddhi Account.
There are many points which are to be cleared in this:
- The daughter must be Indian to have an Sukanya Samriddhi Account. Even if parents are Indian but daughter is not then also you can not open SSY Account. This can be in case if the girl child is born in another country then she gets the citizenship of that country so she will not be able to avail this scheme.
- 1. If both parents are NRI but now in India and daughter is Indian too, then one can open account for the girl child.
- If both or any of the parent is from Indian origin and daughter is also from Indian Origin, then also account can be opened. The parent who is Indian citizen will be operator of account.
There is a problem which may arise in mind of many parents that today they have opened SSY account for their daughter but in future if they shift outside India and does not hold Indian citizenship any more. What will happen to funds which are there in SSY account? For this they need not worry as the citizenship does not make any difference after you have enrolled for Sukanya Samriddhi Account once.
